Why Our Scrubs Are Healthier For You And The Environment

exfoliateExfoliants are among the most popular skin-care products on the market, and they come in two varieties – chemical and physical.

  1. Chemical exfoliants use chemicals to dissolve the dead cells sitting on the surface of the skin.
  2. Physical exfoliants use abrasives to scrape away those cells.

Chemical exfoliants leave people at a higher risk for sunburn and associated skin cancers. Because of this, many come with built in sunscreen, often based on petroleum with another whole range of negative side effects!

Among physical exfoliants, the most widely favoured are aluminum oxide crystals, used in a spa treatment called microdermabrasion. There are now several companies that sell home use microdermabrasion kits, all based around aluminum oxide crystals.

Aluminum oxide crystals are harmless to humans, but when you’re done washing your face, those same crystals go down the drain, into the sewers and out into the oceans, where they cause massive harm.

The US EPA flatly states that any form of aluminum is “highly toxic to many species of aquatic organisms”. In fish, the metal has been linked to birth defects, increased mortality and a host of other complications.

coffee beans wattle seed

But there are organic alternatives. Old school physical exfoliants are making a come back. Pure and Green Organics chose coffee beans and wattle seed grounds for the following reasons:

  • They are grown in Australia, reducing transport related carbon emissions.
  • Harvesting does not kill the plant, so topsoil is held in place preventing soil erosion.
  • We are able to source "waste wise" materials.

Being Wastewise

  • waste wiseCoffee beans that are irregular shapes and sizes are usually not sold but added to the compost heap! We buy irregular sized Australian certified organic coffee beans and use them in our exfoliating facial scrub. They still smell like coffee and provide the same beneficial properties no matter their size! Irregular size does not mean irregular quality.
  • A flavour extract is made from wattle seeds by ethanol extraction, and the grounds are the part left behind, devoid of aroma. These "left-over" grounds are perfect for our unscented scrub as they are spherical in shape making them an extremely gentle exfoliant material for sensitive skin. These grounds are also generally destined for the compost heap, so by rescuing them we are in fact preserving all the water used to produce the seeds.
